Value added tax

Owing to its growing complexity and demanding compliance requirements, Value Added Tax (VAT) is often overlooked or misunderstood. However, VAT impacts every aspect of your business and is the first tax to become subject to HMRC’s ‘Making Tax Digital’ initiative.

Our specialist tax consultant service is here to ensure that all transactions and finances are handled correctly. Most importantly, we’ll make sure all of your business’ finances are compliant with HMRC regulations.

MARKEL fee protection insurance

As it stands, HMRC has access to an extraordinary amount of information regarding UK businesses and taxpayers. An increase in tax investigations and inspectors means that protecting your business from HMRC enquiry fees is a necessity.

Here at Marshall & Co, we offer Markel Tax Fee Protection Insurance to equip your business with personal fee protection solutions. Should an enquiry occur, our team will ensure that the investigation is dealt with without the usual financial burden.

Contact us today to discuss your business’s requirements and the cost of our Markel fee protection insurance.

Our business tax consultants will:

●     Advise on how to manage your VAT on everything from day-to-day trading to one-off transactions

●     Assist with compliance

●     Prepare and submit a variety of VAT, EC Sales Lists and Intrastat returns

●     Identify the appropriate VAT scheme to adopt

●     Defend against HMRC challenges, negotiate penalties, manage VAT inspections and, if there has been an underpayment of VAT, negotiate the repayment plan

We can also advise on property transactions (e.g. acquisitions, disposals, construction and development), acquisition and disposal of businesses, exempt supplies, partial exemption calculations, VAT recovery, motor vehicles and expenses, and special VAT accounting schemes.

Making Tax Digital

The government is phasing in its Making Tax Digital (MTD) initiative over the coming years, with the aim of creating a 'transparent and accessible tax system fit for the digital age'. The new system will see the introduction of a fully digital tax system, with businesses and individuals being required to register, file, pay and update their information via a secure online tax account.

  • VAT is the first tax to become subject to MTD. As of 1st April 2019, businesses with a turnover above the VAT threshold must now keep digital records for taxation purposes and provide their VAT return information to HMRC using MTD functional compatible software
  • Keeping digital records and making quarterly updates will not be mandatory for taxes other than VAT before April 2020, although businesses below the VAT threshold which have voluntarily registered for VAT can opt to join the scheme
  • Moving your processes over to a compatible digital system ahead of time will help to ensure that you are ready when the legislation takes full effect and may also help to improve your business's efficiency and productivity in the long term

Marshall & Co can help your business to implement a digital system to ensure that you meet the new digital reporting requirements. We will also be keeping up to date on the latest developments in relation to MTD. The taxpayer (or accountant) will be required to 'check, confirm, correct, confess'. Preparing for MTD does not need to be difficult. We can work with you to prepare; we are highly trained and experienced at setting businesses up to maintain their records digitally.
