Capital Gains Tax

Marshall & Co can advise on this complex issue to ensure that maximum relief is obtained where available.
Value Added Tax
VAT can easily be overlooked, but, as a transaction-based tax, impacts everything a business does and demands the appropriate time and effort to manage. VAT is becoming increasingly complex with demanding compliance requirements - it is the first tax that will be subject to HMRCs 'Making Tax Digital' initiative. Transactions, whether they are routine daily business purchases and sales, or a larger one-off event, need to be correctly treated for VAT.
Why use our VAT services?
Marshall & Co has a long history in advising businesses on how to manage their VAT, from the start of trading to one off transactions for existing businesses.
We also help with compliance and can prepare, and submit, a variety of VAT, EC Sales Lists and Intrastat returns along with identifying the appropriate VAT scheme to adopt.
In addition to dealing with compliance matters, we are experienced with defending against HMRC challenges, negotiating penalties, managing VAT inspections and, if there has been an underpayment of VAT, negotiating time to pay arrangements. Other areas we can advise on include:
Property transactions (acquisitions, disposals, construction and development) Acquisitions and disposals of businesses
Exempt supplies, partial exemption calculations and VAT recovery
Motor vehicles and expenses
Special VAT accounting schemes
Making Tax Digital
The government is phasing in its Making Tax Digital (MTD) initiative over the coming years, with the aim of creating a 'transparent and accessible tax system fit for the digital age'. The new system will see the introduction of a fully digital tax system, with businesses and individuals being required to register, file, pay and update their information via a secure online tax account.
Why use us to help you comply with Making Tax Digital?
VAT is the first tax to be reportable under MTD. From I April 2019 businesses with a turnover above the VAT threshold must keep digital records for VAT purposes and provide their VAT return information to HMRC using MTD functional compatible software.
Keeping digital records and making quarterly updates will not be mandatory for taxes other than VAT before April 2020, although businesses below the VAT threshold which have voluntarily registered for VAT can opt to join the scheme.
Moving your processes over to a compatible digital system ahead of time will help to ensure that you are ready when the legislation takes full effect and may also help to improve your business's efficiency and productivity in the long term.
Marshall & Co can help your business to implement a digital system to ensure that you meet the new digital reporting requirements . We will also be keeping up to date on the latest developments in relation to MTD. The taxpayer (or accountant) will be required to 'check, confirm, correct, confess'.
Preparing for MTD does not need to be difficult. We can work with you to prepare; we are highly trained and experienced at setting businesses up to maintain their records digitally.

Selling your Business - Exit Strategies and Retirement Planning Services
Everyone hopes to maintain the same standard of living in retirement as they presently enjoy while working, but to achieve this requires considerable forward planning.
Here are some important questions you need to ask yourself:
1. Exit strategies
If you are in business, the first thing you need to consider is your exit strategy.
Will you withdraw from the business, leaving it for the next generation or do you hope to sell the business? If you intend to hand the business over, do you have a workable succession plan? If you intend to sell, how will you value the business, find a suitable buyer and so on? Are you aware of all the tax implications of the timing of disposals?
Do you have an adequate pension in place? Do you have the right type of pension? Are you aware of all the pension possibilities open to business owners and directors? Are you making full use of all your allowances?
Do you have the right balance between savings and investments, and is your portfolio split adequately between exposures?
Do you have adequate life assurance, and have you made provision for long term care and medical insurance for you and your family in your later years?
We can help you answer all these questions and recommend solutions tailored to your needs.
